I work for a bank, The Royal Bank of Scotland, that – like many other companies – has built its success largely on a transatlantic business model. BritishAmerican Business Inc (BABi) has helped us achieve this success in many ways on both sides of the Atlantic and has developed an impressive array of high-quality business services for major multinationals and middle-market companies alike. I am proud to be its Chairman.

BABi stands squarely at the heart of the UK/US business relationship, the largest business relationship between any two countries, with 700 member companies in New York and London and outreach to more than 60 other major business centres throughout North America and continental Europe through our two business networks: the British-American Business Council (BABC) and the European Council of American Chambers of Commerce (ECACC).

Our mission is to help our member companies build their international business. And we offer a broad portfolio of programmes that enable us to do this.
This sixth edition of the British American Business handbook is designed specifically as a guide for US companies looking to expand their business in the UK and continental Europe. They will find a lot of good company in the UK.

About half the US companies involved in Europe locate their European headquarters in London. More than one million people in the UK work for US-headquartered companies (and vice-versa). And you will find more US banks in London than in any US city (and more Japanese banks than in any Japanese city). Two-way US/UK investment totals more than £314bn ($550bn).

There are many reasons for this massive two-way exchange, including our shared commitments to entrepreneurialism and the free market economy. London was, for the 16th consecutive year running, voted as Europe’s best city in the world to locate a business, according to 500 of Europe’s top companies surveyed in Cushman & Wakefield Healey & Baker’s European Cities Monitor (ECM) 2005. It is easier to set up shop and develop a pan-European business out of London than out of any other European city. So it is really not surprising that London (along with New York) is one of two home bases for the leading transatlantic business organisation – BritishAmerican Business Inc.

Our staff have a great track record of providing practical assistance to help American and British/European companies of all sizes expand their transatlantic business – through both their knowledge of the local marketplace and business community, and through the specific business development, intelligence and support services we offer. If you are looking to build your business in the UK and continental Europe, you have come to the right place. Do give us a call – we will be happy to assist you.
