Success breeds success
Greetings from the US Commercial Service (USCS) in the UK, where our team of American Foreign Service Officers and British Commercial Specialists stand ready at the US Embassy in London to assist you in advancing your transatlantic business development goals.
The mission of the USCS is to promote economic prosperity, enhance US job creation and strengthen national security through our global network of one hundred US Export Assistance Centers and more than eighty Commercial Service Teams located at US Embassies and Consulates around the world.
Our strategy is to work with members of local business communities, leading business organizations like BritishAmerican Business, and host country government officials at all levels to promote US commercial interests and to help individual American firms to navigate, compete and win in the global marketplace.
The USCS has enjoyed notable success working with our clients and stakeholders throughout the UK, a nation that is broadly recognized not only as one of our most important trade and investment partners in the world, but also as a primary gateway to Europe, the Middle East and Africa for hundreds of US exporters, service providers and investors.
It is often said that the US and the UK share a very special relationship and this is for a very good reason. Our relationship is deeply rooted in over 400 years of shared history, traditions and values and it is continually nurtured by our mutual commitment to the rule of law, free enterprise, fair trade, economic growth and prosperity. It is, therefore, no surprise that the UK and the US offer each other two of the most familiar, stable and receptive business environments and investment climates in the world.
The UK is our second-largest trading partner in Europe and our fifth-largest customer in the world. In 2006, our two-way trade grew by 10% to $171bn, US exports of goods and services to the UK reached $84bn, while our imports from the UK hit $87bn.
Furthermore, the US and the UK are each other’s largest foreign investors. US direct investment in the UK grew by 7% to $324bn and total direct investment between our two countries was registered at more than $600bn. Success breeds success and that is one of the reasons why 15% of all US investment abroad goes to the UK, where American companies employ well over one million British nationals.
US/UK trade and investment activities play out over a wide range of sectors, including aerospace and defense, medical equipment and pharmaceuticals, safety and security, information technologies, financial services and many others, where our companies cooperate and compete.
US and UK enterprises are at the forefront in understanding the importance of research and development, innovation and productivity. Working together, with strong support and encouragement from both of our governments, American and British companies on both sides of the Atlantic contribute to making this a better world for all.
I am very pleased to have this opportunity to introduce the USCS in the 2007 edition of the British American Business handbook and encourage you to explore your trade and investment possibilities in the UK. As you will note in this excellent handbook, “BritishAmerican Business” is a well-developed value proposition that is within your reach.
The USCS offers a wide range of programmes and business facilitation services and measures its success on the basis of our clients’ success. Don’t hesitate to call on us whenever we can be of assistance. We sincerely look forward to working with you.
