Welcome to the 2008 edition of British American Business, a guide for US businesses considering investment in the UK. Whether you are undertaking a new venture across the Atlantic, or the next step in the growth of your international business, you will find in here a snapshot of relevant information, insight and practical advice as you begin to consider your options.
As the Chairman of BritishAmerican Business, I am especially pleased to recommend this handbook, which represents an introduction to the collective insight of our member companies that have been involved in the transatlantic marketplace. With offices providing support services and resources to our members in London and New York, BritishAmerican Business provides both a mechanism and a network that can enable your enterprise as you expand overseas. Our organization stands at the heart of the business relationship between the US and the UK, and continental Europe, with a membership of more than 700 companies and an extended network that reaches more than 60 major business centers throughout North America and Europe. We are the leading transatlantic business organization dedicated to helping its member companies build their international business.
Members of BritishAmerican Business include many of the world’s largest multinationals as well as hundreds of small and mid-cap companies working to strengthen their strategic networks and build their international business. In 2007, we welcomed more than 8,800 executives to 120 events in New York and London, creating opportunities for our membership to interact and entertain, and to build relationships that support their business objectives. The collective experience of our members provides a great deal of valuable insight and practical advice for businesses preparing to expand into the UK. Our British American Business guide to investing in the UK provides an introduction to that wealth of knowledge and we have compiled a series of articles that capture the expertise of our members, on subjects ranging from tax, immigration, environmental law, executive search and many more.
In addition to the expertise of our member companies, we’ve sought contributions from relevant UK and US government agencies that facilitate inward investment and manage the special relationship fostered by a common history, shared values, language and culture, as well as a commitment to flexible and open markets. The UK-US economic relationship is the largest business relationship between any two countries in the world. Annual two-way investment between the US and the UK totals more than $670bn, with a further $184bn in annual two-way trade. Roughly one million people in the UK are employed by USheadquartered companies and vice-versa. It is a key relationship for both countries.
BritishAmerican Business provides practical help and resources to American and British companies of all sizes and we are increasingly counting major continental European and Asian businesses among our leading members as the level of inward investment in these two great economies continues to rise. Our offering includes a broad range of business development resources, marketing opportunities and business intelligence, in addition to a robust events program in both New York and London. The benefits of membership are significant to companies both large and small as they seek out new opportunities to develop their international business.
If you are looking to build your business in the UK, we hope this latest edition of British American Business will be useful as an introduction both to the considerations relevant to expanding your business into the UK, and to our organization. Best of luck as you embark on this venture. We stand ready to assist, and we look forward to hearing news of your continuing success.
