US COMMERCIAL SERVICE
Dorothy l Lutter

Following
Jefferson’s vision

Dorothy L Lutter, senior commercial officer, us commercial service, explains how the service can help US businesses in the UK to thrive

Above the doors of the US Department of Commerce is President Thomas Jefferson’s mandate to “cultivate peace and commerce with all”. This mission has been at the forefront of our nation’s consciousness since the earliest days of our democracy, and remains the foundation for America’s free enterprise system. Today, we continue to pursue Jefferson’s vision of promoting commerce and economic growth.

In fact, our two countries share a longstanding commitment to the values of free trade, economic growth and prosperity. Importantly, this commitment to open markets and free competition not only accounts for the close relationship between the US and the UK, but also explains why our companies find it so productive to work in each other’s markets. The UK is our largest trading partner in Europe and our fifthlargest customer in the world, accounting for over $92bn of US exports in both goods and services in 2006. We are also each other’s largest foreign investors, with US direct investment in the UK growing by 12.5% to $364bn in 2006.

To illustrate the importance of this relationship, a full 40% of foreign direct investment into the UK is from the US. The role of the US Commercial Service in the UK is to reinforce these already impressive trade and investment figures and, in doing so, to deepen the long-standing ties between US and UK companies. We do this by offering a wide range of programs and services, as well as working closely with members of the local business community, leading business organizations and UK government officials at all levels.

We count BritishAmerican Business as one of our key partners in this mission and a great asset to US firms doing business in the British market. It is a pleasure for me to endorse the 2008 edition of the British American Business handbook and I encourage you to make full use of the information it provides to explore your trade and investment possibilities in the UK.

I invite you also to contact the US Commercial Service whenever you need our assistance.

We look forward to working with you.
