Discover why the University of Sheffield’s ELTC is the right choice for you

The English Language Teaching Centre is part of the University of Sheffield, which was named The Sunday Times UK University of the Year 2001/02. The university attracts over 2,500 overseas students each year from more than 100 countries. It has an excellent reputation for both teaching and research activities.

ELTC

ELTC is open all year and offers various courses, all taught by our professional and friendly staff. We aim to make students’ time with us as useful and enjoyable as possible. Whether students want to study English for a few weeks or a year, for academic, general or business purposes, we offer a structured programme of study, extensive learning resources, excellent opportunities for leisure activities and comfortable accommodation. We are happy to welcome both individual students and groups, and can arrange special programmes for groups.

Courses

ELTC specializes in courses in English for Academic Purposes, preparing students who want to study at a British university. Our Academic English Preparatory Course, which runs between October and June and our Presessional Academic English Course, which runs during the summer, both offer an ideal opportunity to help students develop the English language skills they need for their future studies and to become accustomed to life in Britain. Students can study for anything from one month to a year in order to help them achieve the necessary level of English for entry to university.

Our Management English courses are suitable for students who would like to improve their knowledge of English in a business or management context. Management English courses also serve as a preparation for business-related academic courses, such as MBA and MSc in Human Resources. General English courses run between July and mid-September and students can study for 2 to 10 weeks on these programmes. General English is ideal for students who would like to improve their general English language skills, and to choose some special options as part of their programme.

Facilities

At the same time as learning English, students can enjoy all the facilities of a large university and a lively city, as well as the lovely countryside and outdoor activities that the nearby National Park offers. Transport in and around the city is good and students can visit many places, from small country villages to cities such as York, Leeds and Manchester. Trains and coaches to London are frequent. London airports are about four hours’ travel time from Sheffield. There is a direct rail link between Manchester airport and Sheffield.

Accommodation

Our students have plenty of opportunity to practise their English in their homestay accommodation and to experience the British way of life. Some of them even like the British weather! In the summer, many students choose our comfortable residential or self-catering accommodation.

Leisure activities

ELTC students can use the university’s excellent sports facilities, including the swimming pool, on a pay-as-you-go basis, and there are many opportunities to enjoy sports in Sheffield. Students who are here between September and June can participate in a weekly leisure activity, which is either free or on a pay-as-you-go basis, depending on the activity. They can also enjoy the university’s social activities and entertainments that are usually offered at a low price.

Students who study on one of our summer courses are offered a varied and interesting leisure programme. There is a free weekly excursion and students have free use of university computer facilities. You are sure of a warm welcome and a wonderful learning experience at ELTC.
