I am sure that BritishAmerican Business 2002 will prove an invaluable aid to US companies looking to invest or expand in the UK and I am convinced that the UK is the best place to do business within the EU. Its unique strengths include its people, economy and science and technology, which have all combined to make Britain the top European investment location for American companies as well as the launch pad for new US business ventures in Europe.

In his foreword, Sir David Wright, Group Chief Executive of British Trade International, also highlights some of the key business successes and the winning partnerships in trade and investment that have played a part in building the transatlantic alliance. BritishAmerican Business 2002 demonstrates the strength of the investment links that have played such an important part in forging the wide-ranging and long-standing relationship that exists between the UK and US today. And since the tragic events of 11 September 2001, the bond between the US and the UK is stronger than ever.

In October last year, I attended the very successful ‘UKwithNY’ festival. What had been intended before 11 September as a showcase for all that is good in contemporary Britain became a festival about how we in the UK could demonstrate our solidarity and partnership with the American people in a practical way. After 11 September, Mayor Giuliani urged New York to return to business as soon as possible – and American business did not disappoint. It quickly showed that it could bounce back and that it would not be cowed by terrorism.

I am confident that with the help of organisations like BritishAmerican Business Inc, both our countries’ transatlantic business links will continue to grow and strengthen.
