Welcome to British American Business 2009

Aidan St. P Walsh OBE, Chairman BritishAmerican Business and Partner in Charge International, KPMG LLP

Aidan St. P Walsh OBE, Chairman BritishAmerican BusinessI am delighted to welcome you to the 2009 edition of British American Business, our handbook for companies that are involved in – or are considering becoming involved in – investing in the United Kingdom.

Whether you are undertaking a new venture, or the next step in the growth of your international business, you will find here a snapshot of information and advice that draws on the successful experience of many of our member companies.

With more than 700 member companies, including many of the world’s leading multinationals, on both sides of the Atlantic, we are uniquely well-positioned to help US and European companies looking to grow their transatlantic business.

Last year alone, we welcomed more than 9,000 executives to our programs and we assisted a host of companies with critical business intelligence and counsel; with high-level business referrals and introductions; with targeted marketing channels and platforms: and with a variety of practical business services.

British American Business 2009This handbook provides an introduction to the wealth of collective knowledge that our members have accumulated, ranging from taxation and immigration to labor law and human capital. It also includes contributions from relevant UK and US government agencies.

The UK-US economic relationship is the largest business relationship between any two countries in the world: a million people in the UK are employed by US companies, and a million Americans are similarly employed by UK companies. Additionally, New York and London (our two home bases) respectively provide the main entry points to the broader American and European markets.

BritishAmerican Business is dedicated to helping its member companies connect and build their international business, through the outstanding quality of both our membership and of our programs.

We hope that you will find this latest edition of our handbook to be a useful guide to investing in the UK, and wish you the best of success with all your business endeavors.
