CASE

A one-stop shop for business

For advice and support on building business links with the US, look no further than the Council of American States in Europe. Bruce Greenwood, CASE President and Director Europe, State of Massachusetts, explains its role

Bruce Greenwood, CASE PresidentThere is no greater bilateral trade and investment relationship than that between the UK and the US. With over $410bn invested in the US, the UK is the largest foreign direct investor with almost twice the dollar volume of the second largest investment country, Japan. The US is also the largest investor in the UK.

This two-way street of investment flows constitutes the most significant bilateral economic relationship in the world. Nonetheless, these are turbulent times. Now, more than ever, it is essential that we strengthen our solid transatlantic relationship. Now, more than ever, UK firms considering market entry or expansion in the US – which have the resources to do so – should proceed with their plans to position themselves for future growth. Now, more than ever, UK firms need good, solid advice and support for their initiatives in North America.

This is where the Council of American States (CASE) in Europe, comes into the mix.

CASE is made up of European representatives of individual US state governments that are committed to the transatlantic relationship and have established European offices to further co-operation and mutual support. The CASE representative offices act as a one-stop advisory and support gateway for European businesses considering establishing a presence or expanding a base within the US.

Since its modest beginnings in 1971, with three states and one port authority, CASE has grown into a well-established organization of 19 states, representing approximately 50% of the US population.

With good, solid information the basis for a sound business decision, CASE members can provide the following:

  • Information on establishing a business in the US
  • Information on industry, infrastructure and suppliers
  • Information on available labor supply, qualifications and training programs
  • Data on operating costs, such as wages, taxes and utilities, as well as construction costs
  • Assistance for building and site selection
  • Advice on local, regional and state incentives
  • Contacts with key companies
  • Access to industry and technology associations and other networking opportunities

CASE members welcome your questions and concerns. Your enquiries are addressed individually and are tailored to your business needs. The US is a very big place, a continent as much as a country. When you decide to invest in the US, you will not locate in a country or even a state, but in a specific region or municipality. CASE members can introduce you to the rich variety of locations within their individual states, each with its own cost structure, workforce availability, transportation infrastructure and other important features.

The state representatives have networking partners, who can quickly become partners to your investment initiative. Since business development is an ongoing effort, your state and regional partners will continue to work with you even after your company has set up operations, in order to ensure your company’s growth and success. Members of CASE are interspersed throughout Europe and travel frequently.

They would be delighted to visit you to discuss your plans for North America. All CASE services are absolutely confidential, free of charge and are offered without any obligation.
